Synopsis

“An old-fashioned love story with a twist! A warm rom-com with heart, follow protagonist James as he tries to win the heart of a girl. He’s not alone in this endeavour – his friends will offer him their sage advice. Whether he wants it or not…”
Beginning with a nightmare, the protagonist James imagines himself asking the girl of his dreams out at a crowded party. He fails. Spectacularly. He is slapped out of the dream by friend Jason, a confident, cocky lad, and they return to their game of tennis. As they play, the subject of James’ desire slips in conversation and Jason seizes upon the chance to offer him advice. The film slips into fantasy again as Jason narrates ‘his method’. The jock’s advice centres on masculinity and playing hard to get.
After the game, James calls friend Cas and again gets preemptive advice. Cas is a die-hard romantic and instructs James to fawn over the girl, produce flowers and speak in a faux French accent. Again the scene is played out in fantasy. Of course, in the fantasy, all these methods work perfectly. They all end in “Oh James, you’re so masculine/romantic/funny/sweet!” followed by a swoon into the arms. The final giver of advice is friend Danny, the joker of the piece. He instructs James to be ‘girl funny’ as opposed to ‘old lady funny’. He even gives him a few of his trademark jokes to try out.
The climax of the film takes place at the girl’s barbeque that night where James decides to finally play his hand. He can’t choose a single piece of advice to take – so he tries all of them at once. The effect is not quite what James had hoped. It doesn’t go quite like it always does in his daydreams. After James can’t quite get his point across, he hits rock bottom emotionally and storms off alone. Rachael (the object of his affection) seeks him out and asks him what’s going on. “Why can’t men just be themselves?” she asks and then kisses him.
