Actors / writers wanted to write a TV show - Wellington

I want an ensemble cast of actors/writers of different ethnicities, genders & sexualities
Casting no. 132107  -  Wellington, NZ
Casting complete: Applications now closed. Email to a friend
Basically I want to get a bunch of people together to write a TV show reflecting a more realistic depiction of NZ. I believe that too many of us are under & mis-represented on the big/little screens. And that when we do show up, it is in a 2-dimensional, unauthentic way. My idea for this project is for each actor/writer to take ownership of their character and to depict how their character views life in NZ. The idea is to be honest and write from your gut and your heart - not to over-think it. Often stereotypes are based on truth so this would not be about just trying to disprove them. I don't feel that I can write a Samoan female character or a young Maori gay character with any true voice so I am asking who's keen. I'm asking actors because I think we would bring something different to it & I'd like to give some of us a chance to write yourselves into something as a lot of us don't get many auditions because of our ethnicity or sexuality. I should make it clear at this stage that this is only about writing & that I would have no idea how to get a TV show made.

I want this show to be about a bunch of people who live together. I have general ideas about who they are but most of them are not fixed. I am more interested in having an authentic voice writing that character than someone trying to write for a character they don't honestly feel. This isn't necessarily about writing yourself into the show (you are actors after all) but being confident that you can speak truthfully for this character. One of the themes running thru the show will be that of comfort zones & also of sometimes being different people at different times. Humour would be a big part of this series but not at the expense of anything else.

So this would be a workshop-type thing and we would have to work around each other's schedules. As there would be 5 people involved, that might not be so easy so I only really want people who will commit to times we agree on. Not to be too strict about it but we would want to keep up some kind of momentum. I have only advertised 4 roles because the part of the half-Indonesian smart-ass with a chip on her shoulder is mine! I might change this to be two flats, upstairs and downstairs. Any smaller characters would be written by us core cast.

I might be interested in working on other projects too so even if I don't end up working with you on this one, I might be interested in writing a short with you, or maybe even a feature. Feel free to ask any questions in your application.

(OK, they made me specify whether nudity would be required for these roles. We will definitely be writing fully-clothed and it would be up to you whether your character will be required to be nude at any stage.)

Location: Wellington, New Zealand

Payment details: no pay

Samoan (or other Pacific Islander)

Very dry sense of humour & very loud. Everyone just naturally gravitates to this character but people who don't know her yet are intimidated and worried that she will turn her sharp tongue on them. But she has a really big heart and is very loyal.

Females, aged 25 to 35 from New Zealand

Young gay & Maori

Preferably male and (at least seemingly) very confident. Has had to take care of themselves from a young age.

Any gender, aged 18 to 25 from New Zealand

Young Chinese & preferably an immigrant.

Preferably someone who was not born over here & still has an accent.

Any gender, aged 20 to 25 from New Zealand

Pakeha and straight

I think this would be an interesting character to write. In this flat, you would be a minority but outside we more or less live in your world, or at least that's how the rest of us might see it. We might take it out on you a little bit but you know we're kidding. How you react is up to you but I see you as confident & good-natured.

Males, aged 20 to 35 from New Zealand

Other characters / Other projects

You tell me.

Any gender, aged 18 to 35 from New Zealand
