This is a character based story, which is very much driven by emotion. The perfect platform for aspiring actors to showcase their talents!

In preparation for this project, we are in search of talented, enthusiastic and reliable actors (preferably in the Preston area) who would be interesting in being involved in this exciting project.

This project will give you the chance to have your performances entered to film festivals across the country and screened at a cinema screening later this year!

As this is an independent production, we will not be able to fund actors for this project.

A psychologist (Richard Stillman), fired for breech of confidentiality, now pays his clients for their stories. He records their life stories on cassette tape and fantasises that they’re his own. Whether they’re happy, sad, uplifting or traumatic, he takes notice, as long as they’re interesting.

Through his profession as a psychologist, he came to realise that his life was overwhelmingly lacklustre and the only eventful aspects of his life, were the stories of his clients. So now he embraces this realisation and moulds his life around it. However, he is uncomfortable with the emotional effects that this may have. So he himself is now going through therapy, as an outlet to express his feelings on his new way of thinking.

The film takes place in the therapist’s office, where Richard has been discussing his obsession with collecting stories. Throughout the film we are told three stories that he has collected in recent times:

1. A man’s retelling of the first date he had with his wife.
[A story of warmth and comfort]

2. A woman recalling the time she amended a broken relationship with her dying mother.
[An uplifting story of loss and redemption]

3. A man in a bar wallows in the sadness of his life and discusses the choices and mistakes he has made.
[A dark story of regret and loneliness]

The darkness of the final story reveals the almost sadistic, emotional detachment of Richard Stillman. As throughout that sequence we focus on his reactions to the story, in which he almost seems to relish in this man’s misery. This leads the therapist to beg the question “why would you want such a depressing story for your own?”. Richard answers this question with an articulate, deconstruction of what it means to be a therapist and why it led him to strive for such emotionally driven stories, to help re-evaluate himself with that it means to be an emotional human being.

The film ends with Richard leaving the session and a lingering shot on the therapist, suggests he has been heavily affected by the session.

The Therapist

The Therapist represents the incarnation of who Richard was before he became a story collector. The insinuation at the end of the film, is that this session has heavily effected the way the therapist thinks.

The looks he conveys in the final shot, suggests to the viewer, that the story collector has planted the seed of thought into The Therapist’s head. And that it will grow and perhaps eventually, he will become a story collector.

The Husband

A man recalling the story of his first date with his (present) wife. He was unsure that the date went well. He obsessed over the success or possible failure at his attempts to impress and suspected that he may have been trying too hard because she left the date quite early.

As he was tidying away the living room, he noticed she had left her scarf and he recalls the sense of comfort and happiness he got from that moment, when he knew he had an excuse to see her again, at least once more.

The Wife [Valerie]

She is on a date with a mutual friend. She’s a little apprehensive and shy but it’s not that she’s not comfortable with him, it’s more to do with the fact that she’s not comfortable with herself.

She’s trying to make an impression but also not trying to appear like she’s trying too hard. She has to leave the date early, due to an early start at work the following day. However she’s worried he’ll think that reasoning was just an excuse to leave.
