Ben Hall roamed the bush of New South Wales, earning a reputation among the struggling settlers as a noble man, robbing from the rich and being kind to the poor. Set in the Australian Outback in 1800’s, the film explores the corruption of authority during the time, brutality towards women, and a bushrangers moral code during the brutal deaths of his gang.

As film students at Deakin University we will be shooting on a state of the art Red Epic camera. The film will combine the beauty of the Australian outback and period costumes with cinema quality visuals and high production values.

'Brave Ben Hall’ will be shot in 3 day’s between August 28th-30th, with post production being completed in the 4 weeks following. The final film will be submitted for consideration to a number of film festivals following that.

Auditions will be held the 18th and 19th of August, location and times given upon request.

Lead Actor - Ben Hall

Ben Hall is a notorious bushranger whose gang is on the run from a corrupt police officer. Hall is loyal to his dying friend Burke, doing everything he can to save him. Hall is a leader, who shows great courage and ability. He is rational and understanding but fearless in the face of danger.

A beard or an unshaven roughness will be considered highly but is not essential

Supporting actor - John Gilbert

Gilbert is an obnoxious bushranger who is arrogant and violent, but also intelligent and funny. Gilbert is originally from Canada but has moved to Australia with the lure of the 1850’s gold rush. He has a history of violence and during the film he quickly turns on Elizabeth after she decides to help the Injured Michael Burke.

Males, aged 32 to 45 from Victoria, Australia

Minimum Acting experience: No previous acting experience

Supporting actor - Michael Burke

Michael Burke is a younger bushranger who has been shot in the stomach after a failed robbery. Burke struggles to walk and speak because of his injury and is slowly dying and is cared for by Ben Hall as they are practically brothers.

With minimal lines, the role of Michael Burke relies heavily on an actors ability to show emotion and pain through both subtle and intense facial and body expression.

Supporting actor - Murphy

Murphy is a struggling settler who’s only goal is to protect his wife and their home. After the bushrangers enter his home, he is quick to hold them up with his hunting rifle but after hearing of the gangs plight agrees to help them. Murphy is older than the bushrangers and is likely an ex-convict turned good, making his money on the land.

Supporting actor - Police Officer

The Police Officer is malicious, corrupt police officer that chases after Hall and his gang. The officer looks like a clean cut professional, however is cunning and ruthless with a personal grudge against Ben Hall.

Males, aged 35 to 50 from Victoria, Australia

Minimum Acting experience: No previous acting experience

Supporting actress - Elizabeth

Elizabeth is Murphys wife, she is younger than Murphy to reflect what was sometimes common in the period. She is a country housewife with little more to do than cook, clean and tend to Murphy.

Not as experienced as her husband, she is more shocked when the bushrangers take over their house, but by the end of the film makes a change from frightened to vengeful.

NOTE: their is a rape scene in which nudity will be implied but not shown in any way.
