The Wilston Murder is a short documentary about Queensland’s largest unsolved
crime: the murder of Betty Shanks in 1952. Betty was 22 years old, working in a
government office and going to university. The last time she was seen alive was as
she made her way home after class on the night of Friday 22nd September, 1952.
The following morning her body was found in the front yard of a house in Wilston,
only a few hundred metres from her home. Other people had walked along that
same street only minutes before and after it is suspected Betty was killed there, but
none of those witnesses saw or heard anything suspicious. Sixty years on, no motive
for her murder has ever been uncovered and no suspect has ever been found. The
documentary will be made up of both documentary and dramatic elements, weaving
dramatic recreation of that nights’ events with the story told by a fictional detective,
taking us back in time to a pivotal moment in Brisbane’s untold history.

Betty Shanks

Appearance : Average height, size 10-12, brown mid-length hair.

Betty is much-loved by her family and friends due to her good nature, kindness, and consideration for others. She is extremely diligent in her work as a clerk in a government office and is very driven to do well and succeed.

However, her ambition is not to further her own prospects, but rather to help support her family and repay all the opportunities that her parents have worked hard to provide for her.

Detective Constable Ernest ‘Ernie’ Bonham

Appearance : Average height, medium build.

Ernie is a hard-working detective, which is why he’s been attached to such a difficult
investigation despite being relatively young.

He’s always considered himself a ‘tough nut’, but the nature of the crime has hit him hard, and he now feels personally attached to solving the case for Betty’s sake.

Males, aged 25 to 35 from Queensland, Australia

Minimum Acting experience: Extra

Ernest ‘Ernie’ Bonham (aged 88)

At the conclusion of the documentary, it is 60 years on and Ernie is now a retired
detective. He is still very energetic for his age, and has a youthful spark in his eye.

Ernie continued to work on the Betty Shanks case until he retired, so it is very close
to his heart. It is clear that Betty’s story continues to leave an emotional impact on
him, despite how long the case has been open.

Males, aged 65 to 90 from Queensland, Australia

Minimum Acting experience: No previous acting experience
