'Journey From Madness' (working title) tells the story of William, who suffers from schizophrenia and who, as part of his ongoing treatment, is guided through the basics of social interaction on public transport by a cassette recording from his psychiatrist. Thrust into the unknown, William must overcome the unseen stigma he feels is against him to build an unlikely friendship with Vesna, a fellow commuter, when offered a chance to improve her life.
This short film is to be a low key shoot, and relies heavily on the performance of it's two lead characters, William and Vesna. These roles would suit anyone looking to expand their repertoire, and who feels that they have the talent and skill to play believable characters affected by mental illness.
The film is to be produced and directed by Nick Kelly. Nick has had his last three short films in film festivals both in Australia and abroad (His latest was announced for screening in Florida, US just yesterday!), and we are looking to film and produce this short on a much tighter timeframe than usual, filming on the weekend of the 17th & 18th December. Applicants MUST be available on both of these days. This short film would be a great calling card for actors wishing to be involved in a sweet, enjoyable and poignant character driven short film, and will be entered on the festival circuit, first stop..Tropfest!
Due to the tight timeframes, Auditions will be held using cold readings, which the applicant must be prepared to film and upload to the web. Expressions of interest will first be taken, to close midnight Sunday 4th December. On Sunday 4th, those interested will be sent a selection of sides or a scene to be performed in front of a camera. Be prepared to show some emotion! The lines will most likely involve 'narration' by the psychiatrist, so it would help to have someone with you to play the unseen psychiatrist.
Videos must then be uploaded by no later than midnight Thursday 8th December, with the successful actors to be notified by Saturday 10th December.
Some travel may be necessary, as locations in Newcastle and Sydney are being finalised the upcoming week.
Some final words from the filmmaker: 'I am obsessed with great stories on film, and love to do my best to create them. Just as important as creating great stories however, is creating them with likeminded, talented and FUN people. I have fun creating any project I am involved with, and can guarantee that you'll have fun working with me.'
All transportation costs, meals and out of pocket expenses will be covered. This project is being completed out of love, so no formal pay is available.

William - Lead
William is an unkempt and disheveled looking man. He has a good heart, which he doesn't often show due to his condition. William is schizophrenic. He often forgets to self care (wash, shave etc), has not been able to maintain social relationships, does not hold any work or perform socially useful activities, and is often paranoid of others. William is not aggressive, but simply hides in his shell, distrustful of the world. His psychiatrist is helping him come out of it.

Vesna - Lead
Vesna, suffers from obsessive compulsive disorder and as a result is far from unkempt or disheveled. She is clean, pristine, and finds it extremely difficult to interact with others who do not follow the same irrational standards of hygiene as herself. Her condition has really affected her relationships, to the point where Vesna is in danger of becoming a recluse.
Vesna has one last chance to get over her fears and anxieties which are many, during her ride on the public transport system.
