Robert Westall's "The Machine Gunners" was published in 1975 and won the Carnegie Medal for Children's Literature, became a set text in schools, a million seller and a classic TV series. This musical adaptation was first staged at the Customs House in 1998 and then spent a month at the Edinburgh Festival where it received rave reviews. The Machine Gunners tell the story of a group of teenagers growing up in Tyneside during the Blitz and explores how the war affects their lives and those around them.

Chaz

Males, aged 14 to 16 from the United Kingdom

Singing Range – Baritone/tenor Accent – Geordie/Northern Maximum Height 5ft 5inches Chaz is the central character in the show, an adventurous young lad who is loyal to his friends. He is a strong character and leader among his friends, however this manifests itself in his determination and intelligence rather than by physical strength. He is curious and bold but has an underlying innocence typical of the time. Requires a strong versatile singer.

Mr McGill

Males, aged 30 to 45 from the United Kingdom

Singing Range – Baritone/tenor Accent – Geordie/Northern Mr McGill is Chaz’s father, a kind and gentle man who cares deeply for his family. He is working a full time day job as well as being an ARP at night, this makes him worn down much of the time and is putting pressure on the family dynamic, despite this however he tries to remain positive and as involved with his family as he can. Requires a strong singer.

Mrs McGill

Females, aged 30 to 45 from the United Kingdom

Singing Range – Alto/Mezzo Accent – Geordie/Northern Mrs McGill is Chaz’s mother a very traditional stay at home wife from the period. She is a gentle and loving woman, who lives with the constant worry of the war and especially for her husband. The bond between the family is very strong, despite their very independent lives, and it is Mrs McGill who tries to provides normality and routine. Requires a strong singer.

Mrs Spalding

Females, aged 45 to 60 from the United Kingdom

Accent – Geordie/Northern Mrs Spalding is a larger than life character whose sole enjoyment in life comes from getting and spreading gossip. She is a neighbour of the McGills and thinks nothing of invading their personal space both physically and with her views. She is very much a comic character but more in manner than actually playing the scenes for laughs. Requires a strong singer.

Rudi

Males, aged 18 to 35 from the United Kingdom

Singing Range – Baritone/tenor Accent – German Rudi is a german fighter pilot who is shot down and subsequently capture by Chaz and his gang. Rudi is intelligent and well spoken and treats the children as his equals. Over the course of the show he becomes emotionally attached to the kids, especially to Nicky. Requires a strong singer.

Stan

Males, aged 55 to 65 from the United Kingdom

Singing Range – Baritone/tenor Accent – Geordie/Northern Stan is the boy’s teacher and as well as a Captain in the Home Guard and WW1 veteran. Like many he is haunted by his experiences in the First World War something the kids often play on to get out of work. Stan is well spoken, intelligent and pleasant man who while stern with his pupils is relaxed when with his friends. This part may require some doubling with other roles. Requires a strong singer.

Bodser

Males, aged 14 to 16 from the United Kingdom

Singing Range – Baritone/tenor Accent – Geordie/Northern Maximum 5ft 6 inches A typical school bully pushes around those he deems weaker than him, but runs away when challenged by someone stronger. He is arch rival to Chaz and it is the completion with Bodser that leads to Chaz finding the downed plane. This part may require some doubling with other roles. Requires a strong singer and the ability to do a German accent.

Audrey

Females, aged 14 to 16 from the United Kingdom

Singing Range – Alto/Mezzo Accent – Geordie/Northern Maximum 5ft 4inches Audrey is a bit of a tomboy but maintains a femine air. She initially is reluctantly accepted in the gang because they need her help but she later proves to be a loyal friend and provides support for the other members of the gang. There is an undeniable attraction between her and chaz, however this should be awkward as the boys still think the idea of kissing a girl is “urgh” Requires a strong singer.
