Alcina will be performed at the Parade Playhouse, Kensington (NIDA) on Saturday 28th July. Rehearsals commence on July 14th and actors will be required over the following 2 weeks ( mainly evenings and the preceding weekend).
This is a fully self funded project and the singers and musicians range from current undergraduates to renowned professionals.
100 years before Handel, groundbreaking Italian singer and composer Francesca Caccini entertained royalty with her opera about Alcina - the seductive and treacherous sorceress who lures men to her island, bewitches them with promises of eternal love and brutally discards them when bored.
For the first time in Australia, Ondine Productions brings to the stage Caccini’s only surviving opera, La liberazione di Ruggiero dall’isola d’Alcina, 1625.
Against a darkly beautiful contemporary setting, Love and Duty battle for supremacy as warrior sorceress Melissa seeks to rescue the soldier Ruggiero from the powerful clutches of Alcina and an island where nothing is quite what it seems.
With sumptuous and evocative music performed by renowned and emerging Australian and overseas early music singers and instrumentalists, this exciting one-off performance is a must for lovers of baroque music and those who enjoy cutting edge theatre.
Would be great experience for those actors and extras seeking work with companies like Opera Australia. The intense nature of the rehearsals requires the actors to take direction quickly and have a solid grounding in stagecraft. The ability to read music is an advantage.
