"A SAFE PLACE" [working title]
This screen-story is a character-driven, costume adventure-drama, set in 1808. It centers on John Whitelaw who has been transported to and confined on the island-gaol, Van Diemen’s Land. Whitelaw bolts into the wilderness where he and several of his fellow convicts are being pursued by an ‘unseen’ enemy. Not long into their trek, a deserter redcoat soldier, Bailey, emerges from the undergrowth with a convict woman, Eliza, in tow. Whitelaw and Bailey take an instant dislike to each other. As Whitelaw’s fellow convicts gradually get bumped off, by snipers, Bailey acts like a cold-blooded killer as he goes about eliminating the snipers, one by one. Although Whitelaw realizes Bailey is somewhat of an asset, he banishes him. Bailey shows up later, in the nick of time, to save Whitelaw’s life, after which Whitelaw saves Bailey’s. Whitelaw surmounts his conflict with Bailey who turns out to be Colonel Worthington: a patrician, who dislikes the convict transportation system and who assists Whitelaw and Eliza in the search for ‘a safe place’.
