Pearl is the story of a woman with dementia who is living in a care home. She is frail and vulnerable with no apparent family. Craig is her personal carer who, on the surface is a caring and kind person. But there is another side to Craig, which isn’t apparent. He is systematically physically and mentally abusing Pearl.
The audience does not see this side to Craig as the story is told in his view, which he sees as innocent. It is only revealed after Pearl commits suicide, in the form of flashbacks and this time in Pearls view that you find out what has really happened, depicting exactly how Craig has been abusing his trust. Even after her death, no one is aware of Craig’s evil side.
At the close of the story, he is offered a new job in a different care home, which will allow him to continue his abusive ways, somewhere else.
