A short comedy / drama about two stereotypical old men trying to outdo each other in a city square
A 5 – 7 minute film based on two characters named Jim and George. The scene is set in a busy city centre square (e.g. Piccadilly gardens, Manchester) In this space filled with walkers by and people rushing around in a small corner we are introduced to Jim, a 60ish old grey haired man who has a passion and love for playing his instrument for other. He takes out his well used instrument from his case and sets up next to the bench and starts performing. Jim plays well but struggles to attract people rushing by in there busy and hectic lives so after much trying he decides to take a lunch break. But while Jim eats, George a similar aged looking man comes into the background and unbeknown to Jim gets his own instrument out and starts to play and perform himself.
Now realising this impostor has stolen his place Jim angrily gets up and goes to confront George but seeing him do quite well Jim instead decides to compete with this man and so a little musical battle between these two similar looking and aged men. With the pace building and the two trying to do anything to play better than the other and attract more of a crowd the music they play gets faster and instead of conflicting the two end up playing together in tune without realising it. These two men are trying to battle against each other to play better and louder but instead are playing and performing together and well so people who had previously just walked by have now stopped and thinking these two strangers are actually performing together they give much applause and chuck there lose change towards the floor by them.
With the two performing more with the applause they get from the crowds they end at the same time in a big finale together to a rapturous applause from the people who have been surrounding watching them perform. Now the two men look up towards the cold dark square and actually realise how many people they have gathered playing, whereas before they had been too involved with outdoing the other and playing the loudest the each can.
With the crowd now departing happy and the two being left alone like they were when they had first met the two realise how playing together they actually did quite well and were probably a lot more happier playing like this than on there one. After packing away their individual kit and putting back on their coats and hats the two meet in the middle of what actually started this out spark of music and they warmly shake hands. However just before they depart they now realise the money surrounding them they realise there still yet to really outdo each other and seeing another way of competing and a crisp 2 pound coin in front of them they both jump forward to reach it before of which is when the film will end
This will show how even when you think these two strangers have become friends through playing together there is still that child like competitiveness between them and the still feel like they must outdo one another.
