Is the End in Sight for the Writers Strike?
14 Feb 2008
An end to the writers strike could mean a sudden increase in roles available to American based actors…

TV executives hope writers will resume work within the next week now that the Writers Guild of America is likely to end its three month strike. The protest has cost the Los Angeles economy approximately $1 billion US dollars already, with the East and West Coast guilds representing about 10,000 writers caught up in the strike.

Guild leaders have suggested a provisional three year contract to members providing the potential for an immediate end to industrial action. The tentative agreement ensures writers a share of the growing online media market including reimbursement for web cast television series and movies.

The end of the strike would allow popular television shows to resume for the remainder of the season. For television series with lower audience numbers the effect of the strike may mean a delayed return to air or the risk of cancellation.

Beginning on the 5th November 2007, this was the first strike in 20 years for the writer’s guild. It involved sour relations between the guild and the producer’s alliance with communication ceasing altogether in December. Globally, it has proved to be a landmark protest for artists looking to support each other in order to make a stand for better working conditions.
