Full Made In Melbourne Film Festival Press Release.
1 Dec 2010
To screen unclassified films you need an exemption from the OFLC. Ordinarily this comes with an 18+ age restriction but under special circumstances you can apply to have the age restriction lowered to either 15+ or general exhibition. Our content clearly didn't qualify for general exhibition so the question was put to Federation Square before the application was submitted: is the 15+ age restriction, where children under the age of 15 must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian, satisfactory?
The answer was yes.
Further measures were taken with selected films personally reviewed by Federation Square to judge their content and impact. Everything was approved. The more contentious films were programmed last, late at night, and it was agreed that the festival would place visual warnings before these films were screened, and even stop the show and announce warnings prior to these films. So despite all agreements and decisions made, with less than a week to go before the festival, 'senior management' have stepped in and decided they want the exemption lowered to general exhibition. But in order for that to happen almost half the program would need to change I refused to do that.So a compromise was reached and we're moving into the trendy, modern 'glass house' that is BMW Edge.
Details are: 9pm, Wednesday December 1st BMW Edge @ Federation Square.
The venue is spacious and comfortable with picturesque views of the city, and, with thethreat of rain on Wednesday, may just be for the best. The program remains unchanged – still a fantastic line-up of award-winning local films. The prizes on offer remain unchanged. We're still supporting SecondBite, a local charity that redistribute food to the homeless and disadvantaged. We're still the only festival exclusively for the Melbourne filmmakers. And now we have seats!
So come see the show too 'controversial' for the public. Tell all your friends, update your websites, and spread the word about the change. We'll even invite senior management. It would be nice if they sat down and actually watched the films they've already judged ... Regards,
