Photo & headshot tips

Photos

Having good quality photos is an essential part of a strong profile. It's also important to think about how your selection of photos represents you. If you want to be a high fashion model lingerie shots are not appropriate and will give a modeling agent the wrong idea about your interests and abilities. Similarly, if you want to be a screen actor it is essential that you have natural, classic looking photos on your profile and that you avoid using photos that do not support your professionalism.

If you're taking your own photos, here are some basic tips to help you achieve good results.
  • Have someone else take your photo - Avoid taking pictures of yourself in the mirror (the casting professionals want to see you - not your camera or your bathroom!).
  • Avoid using cell phones and webcams - Your photo should be of the highest quality possible with enough detail that the casting professionals can see you clearly.
  • Take your photo against a simple background - Messy rooms, over-complicated backdrops and other people in the picture will compete for attention with you. If you want to include other elements make sure they add value to the photo (such as a picture of you on stage performing).
  • Keep your photos up to date - If the photo isn't a good representation of what you look like now, replace it with something more up to date. You want the casting professionals to what they can expect to see when you show up at the audition.
Headshots

When an advertiser is looking through applications on StarNow, your headshot is the very first impression that you give them and can determine whether you are shortlisted and contacted or not, so it is important that it represents you well.

Some tips for choosing the best headshot are:
  • A headshot is a shot of your head and shoulders only.
  • A black and white headshot is sometimes preferred over a colour headshot for actors.
  • Actors and often models must use honest photos as headshots, meaning that the photo must not be airbrushed and must look like you.
  • Ensure that you are facing the camera and smiling naturally.
  • Use a non-distracting background.
