Have you got what it takes? You want a career as an actor or performer, but are you prepared for it? If you are motivated by dreams of holding an Oscar in your hands and living a life of celebrity stardom, you are likely to be disappointed.
Many actors struggle to find work, and most have to supplement their income by doing other jobs. So what qualities are required to survive, and what will enhance your chances of success?
Personal Qualities Some skills can be acquired, some are just natural, but the following qualities are essential for anyone who wants to make a success in the field of performance.
Talent - most of it is natural, but hard work, practice, and training can help to enhance natural abilities like singing and dancing. Good Memory - The most basic requirement for any performer. Practise learning lines even when you are out of work to ensure that you keep your memory in shape. Fitness - Whether for dance, fight sequences, or just working long hours on a movie set, you have to work on your levels of energy, fitness and stamina to be a survivor. Discipline - In film and television, time is money. You have to be punctual, professional and well-prepared for every job. Versatility - You have to be prepared to be flexible and adaptable to stay in work. Creativity - You always have to be ready to think of new approaches to interpreting roles, or even new ways of getting noticed and getting employed! Ability to be Part of a Team - You must be prepared to be a team member. Although a big ego can be the hallmark of a ‘star’, it’s not an aid to getting work when you are starting out. You must also be prepared to accept instruction and criticism from the director. Resilience - You have to be strong to keep on working hard and going to auditions; and you have to be able to bounce back psychologically, if you don’t get the jobs. Extra Skills - Your employment chances are helped by learning extra skills e.g. being able to play a musical instrument, speak another language, drive, ride a horse, juggle, walk a tightrope, play a sport etc.
