Music experience

Originally from Penrith N.S.W his first performances in front of a band were at High School dances and parties in the early 70’s. In 1977 he formed his first “punk” style band “Johnny Curtain and the Back Benches”, who were heavily influenced by bands such as The Sex Pistols, The Clash, AC/DC, Queen and XTC. This band played covers and original material, and played gigs around Sydney.

“Nuthin Fancy” was the next band to evolve during 1981, which played mostly originals with selected covers that also played pubs around Sydney. Despite many long pauses, this band still plays periodically in Sydney’s Western Suburbs. During the first of these pauses, Styne took a break from the band to learn the very basics of saxophone playing.

After numerous theatre roles, in 1984 Styne successfully auditioned for the role of Jake Blues in “The Blues Brothers Revival”. This role allowed his performing skills to be extended to choreographing and stage managing, then eventually tour managing the show. Popularity grew and the show toured extensively around Australia and overseas. After 10 years of experiencing life as a full time performer, these tours continued intermittently over a period of 20 years.

In between BBR tours, in 1991 Styne formed a five piece band in Tassie known as “The Legends”. This band made use of Stynes ability to take on voices and appearances of others, allowing him to perform cover versions of material of various well known artists (i.e. Joe Cocker, Freddy Mercury, and Alice Cooper).

In 1996 the Legends changed look and style from being a concept band to become a hard rock band. This band toured regularly, providing support to acts such as The Angels, Rose Tattoo, Baby Animals, Hoodoo Gurus and twice for Jimmy Barnes. As band members changed the band continued under many different names, and most recently performed locally until early 2006 as “Stynes Missiles”.

Styne reformed “The Blues Brothers Revival Band” in 2005
