Growing up in the countryside of Western Australia, Annaliese Gann never dreamed of being a model. Now based in Sydney, life as a full-time model is very different from her early days on the farm, playing with her siblings and pets.
We chatted with Annaliese recently to learn more about her career to date and see what advice she had for other StarNow members.
How long have you been on StarNow and what prompted you to join? I've been on StarNow for six years now. I joined before I became a professional model, because I was looking for opportunities that I couldn't find elsewhere. StarNow is an amazing portal to get experience and find jobs.
What was your first modeling job, and how did you land that position? My first ever modeling job was when I was 15. It was for a local catalogue for a shopping centre and I was modeling for the brand Noni B. At the time I was modeling with a local agency near Perth in Western Australia and they helped me get the job. I still remember receiving the catalogue in my letterbox and being so excited to see myself in print!
From there, how did you get your next role? What was the job? My next role was a runway show for a variety of local designers and also big designers such as Betty Tran. Again, I got this job through my local agency, and from there my love for the job flowed.
What was the weirdest thing about being on First Dates Australia? First Dates was an amazing experience. The weirdest thing about being on the show was being set up with a complete stranger and having to meet them on national TV with no practice run. It was so funny! I had a lot of media attention after being on the show, which I didn't expect. Matt (the guy I was set up with) and I are still good friends today. I'm glad I took the plunge and had some fun!
You’re currently signed with Wink Models in Sydney and Brazen Models in Melbourne. What do you look for when finding an agent? When finding the right agent I focus on a few important things:
You have a large following on Instagram, and have worked with lots of major brands. What advice would you give someone looking at becoming an influencer? If you're looking at becoming an influencer that's great! A few tips I'd give you are:
With such a large social following, how do you balance sharing your life with your followers, and your privacy? To be honest, I sometimes struggle with this one. When posting Instagram stories I post a few things from my day to keep people up to date, but not everything as I'm very busy and couldn't if I tried. People love knowing what I'm doing but ultimately I am a very private person. I never really share what my friends and family and I are doing. Time with people is really important to me so I don't like to bring social media into that time unless it's an event for work.
You're an active member of StarNow and have recently achieved Pro status. Do you have any advice for people looking to make the most of the site? Yes how exciting! To make the most of the site I believe you should apply for every relevant job. If you receive an email from a casting director, reply straight away. It shows your professionalism and interest. People in this industry don't like to wait as time is money. Showcase your best photos. If you're a model, include your digitals on your profile as this will make things easier for casting professionals. If you're an actor, have recent headshots and display your current showreel. Make sure all photos are recent and taken within the last 3-6 months. You will do well if you put in the effort and be professional!
Both your Instagram and StarNow profiles are full of beautiful photos. How do you decide what to include? Thank you! I choose my photos to display my flexibility between fashion and editorial modeling. I like to showcase everything from swimwear to lifestyle images. Showing your diversity as a talent is a big draw card, I am very lucky I have a look that fits into many categories. On Instagram I also like to reflect my advocacy for body positivity, as I am very passionate about helping others feel more confident in the skin they're in! I hope to make a positive impact on social media and reflect self-love and positivity.
How would you like to see your career evolve in the next five years? I would like to work with bigger clients in fashion and move overseas to America. I am aiming to move to L.A. or New York in the next few years as there is great opportunity there for modeling. I would like to get into presenting or acting. I aim to be the best role model I can be and generally just help people, I love helping others and that's why I think I do my job. I hope I can be a positive impact on women and encourage them to embrace themselves exactly how they are.
