Meet the StarNow Crew — Maddison

Maddison is multi-talented and multi-faceted. Between answering your questions on social media and keeping the StarNow HQ running smoothly, she manages to pack a lot into her day – think lunchtime gym sessions to after-work netball games.

She always knows where the newest, coolest café is, the lyrics to Drake’s latest song, and – most importantly for us – where the office supply of coffee is kept.

What's your role at StarNow, and what does a typical day at work involve for you? My job title is Office Coordinator. A typical day at work involves lots of variation! I could be coordinating our social media posts and answering your messages on Facebook one day, to helping with recruitment and engagement, writing blogs, organising fun events for the office or, ordering supplies for the StarNow team. It’s a very broad job description I have going on here!

What's your favourite part about working at StarNow? The environment we work in. Not only do we have a very cool space, the people that work here make this such an awesome place to work. It's a positive, fun and hardworking environment at StarNow!

What's something you can’t live without? My family. I am an only child but grew up next door to my cousins (three houses in a row, 7 of us). My cousins are my brothers and sisters and my Nan and Papa helped raise me. Mum and Dad are both rocks in my life…. best friends and life teachers all rolled in to one, I’m a lucky gal.

What characteristic do you most admire in others? Grit. The power of the mind is amazing and witnessing someone with an incredibly strong mental frame of mind is super inspiring!

What would you like to tell yourself at age 13? Stop worrying about what other people think. You can be the ripest, juiciest peach in the world, and there's still going to be somebody who hates peaches.

If you could visit anywhere in the world you've never been, where would you go? The Middle East! In particular, Jordan, Egypt and Turkey (especially Gallipoli).

How do you recharge?

  • Spending time with those great people in my life that exude good energy.
  • Going home. There's no place like it.
  • Running. Best medicine EVER.
  • Activities. DOING something that I enjoy i.e. walks, brunching or beach hangs.
  • Lying in a really cosy spot with a fantastic book in one hand & a drink to suit the weather in the other.

If you could write a book about your life, what would it be called? Yes, no, maybe, I don’t know.

What does your perfect Saturday look like? My perfect Winter Saturday is very different to my perfect Summer Saturday.

Seeing as it's Winter here in New Zealand it would look like a 7:30am wake up (A lie in but not sleeping in so much I don’t feel like I have wasted the morning…I like to maximise the most in the mornings), either scrambled eggs on toast at home or at Prefab with my partner, a win at netball, a lunch out with friends or parents, watching some club rugby then off to have a few drinks and some good snacks with pals!

What is the best advice you've been given, or wish you had of been told sooner? Worrying doesn’t change anything, enjoy the moment and cross the bridge when it comes. Or. Find the reason in everything good and bad, there is a lesson to be learnt in it all.

Which talent would you most like to have? Unreal athletic ability! Closely followed by an amazing singing voice.

Show us a place in Wellington that is of significance to you and tell us why Prefab.

If I ever wonder where my money has gone at the end of pay week, it is here. Basic food done incredibly well, good vibes and the loveliest service in the Lower North Island. Whenever I Instagram story this place, it is usually followed with a response from a friend saying 'Do you live there?' And when I think about it, yes, I practically do.

What's your life motto? When the will is strong, everything else is easy.

What's your biggest pet peeve? People who are late…. all of the time.

My Dad was in the Army, so I learnt that showing up an hour early is always better than showing up 5 minutes late. Being on time is both a sign of respect and a mechanism to have less stress in your life.

Who's your favourite StarNow member at the moment? I could never pick one! There is so much amazing talent on StarNow! Narrowing it down to my top five (woops) at the moment would be Kate Moore, Lewis Macmaster, Chish K, Eliza O and Isabella Huston. I will let the profiles speak for themselves.

Random Maddy facts:

  • I love banana's. What coffee is to most of you, bananas are to me. I don't feel normal if I haven’t had one at some point during the day..
  • I hate to say it but I am a social media addict. My friends tried to help me out by setting me a target of 24 hours without any social media. I had withdrawals. Social media addiction is a real thing, I swear. Google it, there have been studies done on this!
  • I'm a massive fan of scenic walks
  • I am incredibly competitive. Back in 2010, I made a bet with a couple of friends to see who could go the longest without McDonald's burgers or Chicken McNuggets. I am still going…. even though I am the only one competing.
