Lewis Macmaster always wanted to be a model. Or a witch. Now that she's a full-time model – living and working in Melbourne with some seriously cool brands – she's putting the witchcraft plans on hold. For the time being.
We recently caught up with Lewis to find out how she got started in the modelling industry and her advice for those wanting to make the most of StarNow.
Did you always know you wanted to be a model? If not, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I almost always wanted to be a model. I just loved the way models could make any outfit look good, purely through their confidence. It fascinated me, like a real life example of mind over matter, except it was their conviction of how good it looked that convinced the onlooker! I was fascinated. If I couldn't be a witch, I had to at least master this magic called modelling.
How long have you been on StarNow, and what prompted you to join?
I joined because my sister, Isabel recommended it as a good place to start in the industry.
I was scared to approach a modelling agent without any modelling experience under my belt, so I planned to build up my portfolio using StarNow before seeking representation. I have been on StarNow for four years now.
How has StarNow helped shape your career?
It was awesome because I didn't have an agent, but it gave me a platform on which I could represent myself. People have scouted me through StarNow that I would never have bumped into in real life. My career wouldn't exist without StarNow – literally. I needed to be my own agent.
Being on set was a dream come true, I was in my happy place. We were all like family. I got to mark the clapperboard for the first time and experience some amazing things. You learn so much from being on set! It was just the beginning for me.
You're an active member of StarNow, with a great profile. Do you have any advice for people looking to make the most of the site?
I think the StarNow profile page is dynamite! It's this blank canvas that you curate, you can make it look as professional or casual as you want, it's all up to choosing/creating your best pictures.
I say start simple, you only need three photos to start (headshot, 3/4 shot & full body shot). That's how I started. And then keep building it, and never stop!
What’s one thing you wish you had known before getting in to modelling?
That modelling is a skill. Some people are born knowing how to be photogenic, others learn it, I definitely learnt it. Be willing to try a shot and get it wrong, because that way you learn how to get the shot right.
You've recently featured in shoots for popular Aussie brands Frank Body and Gorman. What was it like working for them?
It was amazing! I was seriously buzzing the whole time. It's cool when you've always loved these brands and then one day you're shooting for them, and it's like, hang on, how did I get here? Haha.
What three things have you found to be essential to succeed in this industry?
Do you have any advice for someone who's considering joining StarNow or hesitant to start applying for roles?
Have a look at the jobs listed and see if they look like fun! And if so, don't hesitate. Life waits for no wo/man! I've had so many fun adventures simply as a result of clicking 'apply' to a listing.
Is it hard to get started? When I began I thought, if I apply for 41 jobs, I'll have to get at least one. I think I only applied for 16 jobs on the first day, but I actually got one! And that was enough to fuel me to keep going. If you applied to four roles a day for a month you would go far.
Your StarNow profile is full of gorgeous images and stills from your diverse range of work. How do you decide what to include on your profile?
Less is more in my books, so if I don't yet have the perfect headshot, I don't upload a million "almost right" ones. It just emphasises the point that I haven't gotten the right one yet. Rather, I like to choose a few favourites, and then do heaps of test shoots and update it when I have got something better!
I also include as much diversity as possible. The wider the range of work you can show, the more diverse bookings you get – which is so fun! Once I had done one music video, I got booked for even more! Every time I break into a different area of performing I upload it!
You're currently signed with Duval Agency. What do you look for when finding an agent?
When looking at agents I look at what brands they have worked with and how well they present themselves online (ie. is their social media well curated, does their website look quality or amateur).
How would you like to see your career evolve in the next five years?
I'd like to be living and modelling overseas – seya 'straya! And be a regular catwalk model at all the major fashion weeks.
I'd also love to be sharing my creative projects with the world and continue embracing my own look and energy. Everyone is their own unique version of "freakin' awesome", and I have been lucky enough to get booked a lot recently, just for being me.
In five years I would like to see more and more brands booking models that inspire people to be themselves rather than conform.
What's the best moment of your career so far?
Shooting the L'Oreal Pro International Campaign – out in 2019! I arrived on set to realise that the entire creative team had been flown in from overseas. The core group were from Paris, and the rest from other states in Australia. It was surreal being booked to work with all these creatives that are so highly recognised in their industries.
Favourite thing about Melbourne?
The humour. I meet so many people; at shoots, on the train, at cafes, and there is definitely a Melbourne banter. I always miss it when I go overseas.
I like building. My dad is a carpenter so I grew up on building sites.
Best way to blow off steam?
Meditate. Gym. Or dance it out.
One thing people would be surprised to know about you?
I love philosophy, psychology and spirituality. Especially mind over matter, that stuff fascinates me! I recently walked on 2000 degree coals... just to prove that I could do it to myself. Heehee!
Favourite city and why?
Venice! Because I feel most zen around water, and that city is dripping in it!
What’s the number one thing on your bucket list?
To walk for Chanel. In Paris.
