Edwina Thorne is a Trumpeter, vocalist, composer, arranger, owner / operator of Gazelle Music Ltd, Auckland, New Zealand offering a 16-track recording facility which is located in Beach Haven, Auckland.
Edwina’s has received private tuition from numerous international performers and coaches including: Carmine Carusso, Woody Shaw, Freddie Hubbard, Roy Stevens, Vince Penserella, Jon Faddis, Lew Soloff, Reynolf Schilke, Lou Mucci, Mike Methney, Jimmy Owens, Jeff Stout, Barry Harris, Dr Rheinhart.
Edwina’s television appearances from the age of 12 include: Joe Franklin Show in New York; the New York Jazz Show with Mel Lewis, James Williams, and Ron McClure. She has be the subject of such programmes as Kaleidoscope, and Weekend TV.
Edwina has continuously performed at numerous jazz festivals in New Zealand and the U.S.A. including the New York Women’s Jazz Festival, Lincoln Centre, Dewar’s New York Village Jazz Festival and upward of 20 Festivals in NZ.
Edwina has performed with many bands including the National Youth Orchestra, the Royal New Zealand Air Force Band, Roger Fox Big Band, Red Mole Theatre Company, Wellington Regional Orchestra, Golden Horn Big Band, Serendipity Theatre Group, Susan Sexton Rock Band, La Chicas de Nueva York Latin band, Pink Terrace all-female show band, E.T. Electrik band ( original Latin jazz rock arrangements) and Jazzwyze ( acoustic quintet playing jazz standards)
Edwina has played in Jazz bands alongside Slide Hampton, Etta James, Houston Pearson, Dave Stahl, Allen carter, Jimmy Owens; and in backing bands for West Side Story, The Circus, Bruce Forsythe, Vince Hill, Sir Harry Seacombe.

Career highlights include: Playing second cornet in the Eric Ball composite band directed by Lloyd Thorne ( L.T.C.L., Queen’s Service Medal); Edwina’s late father, the Lincoln Centre Women’s Jazz Festival with her own group, the Thorne Birds, playing the Blue Note in New York and cited by George Benson, forming a band with Alto- Sax great Vince Herring, performing in Cologne/Germany, Stockholm/Sweden, with the late great Mel Lewis and in Helsinki/ Finland with Clarke Terry as well, playing at the Monterey Jazz Club, ‘Fog Bank’, playing at the Rochester Latin Festival.

Edwina has taught music specializing in ensemble performance and instrumental tuition for 20years. Edwina is an excellent trumpeter, Flugal Hornist, Vocalist well trained in composition and improvisation from Berklee College of Music where she formed Thornebirds who performed at the New York Women’s Jazz Festival and noted in the book “Stormy Weather” about women in Jazz in America where Edwina lived for ten years. Edwina’s has enormous experience and the ability to facilitate any style of music.
