Since the age of 9 years old, James D has been involved in music. During his school years he became a Grade 5 clarinettist and performed with the Croydon Schools Symphonic Orchestra at various classical music concerts. At the age of 16 he made the transition to a vocalist and joined the John Ruskin College gospel choir as one of the leading tenor parts. For nearly 3 years, James performed as a leading male vocalist in both the St Mary's Church choir in his native Croydon and the Edenham High School choir where he also does support work. In 2009 perfromed a tribute to his idol Frank Mccomb , at the UK Soul Jam showcase at the famous Jazz Cafe in London. He also begun to write and record his very first solo EP entitled 'Like a Dream' which was sold exclusively on iTunes. In 2010 he won an independent artist competition for the website Tunited, where his music was judged by Midge Ure from the famous 80's pop band Ultravox. His track ‘When I Met You’ was selected for airplay on ‘The Soulchoonz Show’ in December 2009, airing worldwide and online through various radio stations,as well as 'Sugar Radio Show' (NE1FM). The original mix of 'Need Someone' has also made an appearance on the London club scene as supported by DJ's such as Big John Freeman.
He is currently the founding member and leader of his band 'James Headley & The Funkateers. The band was founded in 2010 and has played at numerous venues such as The Cavendish Arms, Proud Camden and The Gallery.
