Actors Needed for Audio Drama Podcast
Y2K tells a story of love, identity and long-distance friendship. It is set in both 2000 and 2020, mainly in the cities of London, Birmingham, and Auckland. The characters hail from Canada, Sweden, New Zealand, UK, and more.
It’s the end of 1999. Kat and Jess are very close friends and share a flat in London. In January 2000, Jess moves to Auckland. Their voice mails to each other tell the story of a year in their lives when *everything* happens, and how they try to support each other from across the oceans.
It’s the end of 2019. Olivia is a student in Birmingham. She is trying to find baby pictures of herself and fires up her mum’s old 90:s laptop. There are no baby pictures, but she does find something else – audio files from 2000, dozens of them. She listens to a few and realizes they are voice mails between her mum and her mum’s friend. She – of course! – decides to turn them into a podcast.
As the story unfolds, friends and family of Kat and Jess turn up in the voicemails, and leave voicemails of their own. Olivia also finds it progressively harder to keep what is going on in her life separate from the podcast…
Are you ready? Welcome… to the year 2000!
The show will be released in January 2020 with weekly releases all through the year, making a total of 52 regular episodes, plus a prologue and an epilogue. Each episode is 6-9 minutes long. There will also be 4 bonus episodes for Patreon supporters, which will be released on Patreon during 2020 and released to everyone in 2021. The prologue will be released early – in September this year – as part of International Podcast Month.
There are 3 leads, 7 supporting and 2 minor characters. 2 leads, 1 supporting and 1 minor character have already been cast, which leaves 1 lead, 6 supporting and 1 minor character for this casting call. Additional supporting/minor characters may turn up as the later scripts are finalized. The leads are in at least 54 episodes each. Supporting characters are in 10-20 episodes each. Minor characters are in less than 7 episodes.
We especially want to encourage LGBTQIAP+ actors, actors of colour and marginalized folks to audition, but everyone is very welcome. Please audition for any role you like, regardless of ethnicity, ability, gender and sexuality. We would however expect you to feel comfortable with the pronouns of the character you choose to audition for. Non-binary and gender-fluid folks are very much encouraged to audition for any role they are interested in. Where a specific accent is required, we ask that you feel at home in that accent.
Audition / Rehearsal / Production datesAll recording will be done remotely.
We are hoping to do a full-cast online meet-up sometime in June. There will also be online small group directing sessions.
Lines will be due in batches for about 10 episodes at a time, the first due at end of June and the last at end of October.
Also, we know life can get in the way sometimes, so this schedule can be flexible as long as there is an open communication.
