Actors (Early 20's) Needed for Student Short Film

Victoria, Australia
Listed by View details

"While You Were Partying, I Studied the Blade" is a 5 minute comedy/drama short film set at a Halloween party that follows Kevin, a 20-year-old introvert and Samurai enthusiast who takes up the challenge of becoming social and making friends. Actors are to be advised that the short will contain medium level coarse language. Two roles will also require smoking (herbal, if preferred).

A public screening seems unlikely at this point but we will be releasing the film online.

We are student filmmakers in our first year at Swinburne and are eager to get into production with you. At this moment there is an issue of COVID-19, so a shooting date isn’t set and subject to change, but we will give you notice as soon as we know. The film is set at a Halloween party so there will be a requirement for you to wear a costume, although we will provide these.

Audition / Rehearsal / Production dates

Auditions to be held in the coming weeks.
Production dates to be confirmed (although aiming for November).

Job payment

Unpaid – this is a collaboration opportunity - This is a student film. We'd like to compensate you for your work, if funding exceeds our expectations. But at this stage, it is unpaid.

Expenses paid - Travelling and catering on the day.

Collaborations should create mutual benefit and are usually amateur, student or 'Time for Print' projects.

Dear applicants,

I hope that you are all doing well in these highly unprecedented times. We want to thank you all for your interest in joining us for our upcoming project - we have seen an abundance of potential among all who have applied.

My crew and I regret to inform you, however, that we will have no choice but to prematurely close our casting call. In order to work in an environment in accordance to the current COVID-19 regulations from the Victorian government, the staff at Swinburne have been put through a lot of pressure to revise our curriculum.

We as students will also have to adapt our preproduction material in order to adhere to these regulations. This means we will only be able to shoot on campus, casting among only our cohort.

Thank you all for your understanding, and sincerely apologise for the disappointment.

Kind Regards,

Quinn L

Male Lead - KEVIN

The protagonist, Kevin is naïve and socially awkward yet finds, or at least tries to find confidence through the Samurai persona he has adopted. When thrust into the party environment he is out of his depth and must find it within himself to handle the unknown situation. The story takes him from awkward to excited to melancholy as he deals with this. In the story he wears full samurai robes and wields a katana.

They see this and lend a helping hand, we need someone who can come across as approachable and kind. They are dressed as a pirate much akin to Jack Sparrow so physically they can have long hair though a wig will probably be required. They also sport an Irish accent so this will be necessary. Note: Cara will be smoking herbal cigarettes.

Supporting Role - FRANKENSTEIN

Frankenstein is quite drunk, outgoing, and Australian. Though though he comes across as friendlier to Kevin than Brett, he still doesn't care about him that much and is moreso just amused with his quirks. Frankenstein will be dressed as Frankenstein of course.

Supporting Role - GEORGE

Much like Frankenstein, George is drunk and outgoing. Although he appears friendly, he also only shows an interest in Kevin's features. He will likely be required to wear a morph suit and mask.

Male, aged 19 to 25

Supporting Role - JACK

Jack is Kevin’s old friend from high school that invited Kevin to his Halloween party. He is absent for most of the story and when he is present, isn’t really there mentally and rushing to get back to other things. Because of this he is kind to Kevin but also casually dismissive and not interested in who he is. Physically we are open to any look and haven’t decided on a costume yet.
