The Nailing Of An Older Woman begins follows the story of Maria, a young beauty technician, who happens to be a transgender woman. It’s set during COVID19, therefore business isn’t great, however she is supported by her friend Claire who is raking in the money at her new job. Claire suggests Maria do call out nail appointments to boost her income.

Maria meets an old lady named Ingrid who insists on having her nails done through her letterbox in an effort to self isolate. Ingrid tries to pry into Marias life wondering why Maria doesn't know her grandmother unintentionally provoking her anxiety. After the appointment Maria calls her mother asking. She discovers her grandma has been dead for four years and she never knew.

Maria has a follow up appointment with Ingrid. They become friends and Ingrid sings all things bright and beautiful with Maria giving Maria her first experience singing a hymn.

Maria, being a people pleaser as a natural defence, begins doing extra things for Ingrid such as her shopping, but Claire is skeptical that Ingrid could be transphobic and Maria might be wasting her time. Maria decides to test Ingrid by painting ‘Jesus loves trans people’ on her nails along with other biblical quotes. When Ingrid takes her hand inside to see the nails she goes off to find her glasses so she can read them better, during this Maria runs away.

Maria wonders about her grandma and goes to sleep. This results in a nightmare where she gets choked out by a hand through Ingrid's letterbox. It is revealed to be her grandmother

Following the nightmare Maria meets her mother Sue to visit her grandmother's gravestone. They briefly explain themselves to each other. After this encounter, Maria decides she’d had enough of being held away from people and goes to visit Ingrid. She knocks on her door and waits, but there is no answer. As she goes to leave the door opens revealing Ingrid, risking her life by being outside, holding the nails Maria gave her in a decorated box, to show her how much she cares that she feels accepted.

When first meeting Ingrid you might think she is your average convervative older woman: she likes birds, enjoys singing hymns and reading the newspaper. However she has an open kindness about her that not many trans people are used to. Ingrid’s purpose within the narrative is to express that you should not judge a book by it’s cover. She goes against the stereotypes of the older generation being bigoted and closed minded. She see Maria as the woman she is.

Sue is Maria’s mother. Although she has an open mind about her daughter being trans she feels a strong need to protect her from the transphobic ideas people and society have. This is why she stops Maria from seeing her grandma. To Sue, this felt like the best most logical decision, however her fears prevented her from seeing the benefit that Maria would have got from knowing her grandma better and having the opportunity to be honest with her. Sue believes she is just trying her best.

Female, aged 35 to 55

The representation of Maria’s grandma that we see as an audience is truly a figment of Maria’s anxious imagination. The grandma in Maria’s mind is aggressive and quite frightening. This fantasy version of her grandma embodies all her fears about transphobia, and also presents an unconventional way of grieving a grandma she never knew. This role involves nudity but we are happy to adapt the script for the actor's comfort level.
