'Not in Our Backyard' is an original, thought provoking musical about love, lies and land-rights set in WA.

The musical will be produced at the Boardwalk Theatre, Mandurah Performing Arts Centre on Saturday 12 June 2021.

Auditions will be held on Saturday 20 February and rehearsals begin on Tuesday 2nd March 7.00-9.00pm.

The composer & musical director James Perkins has conducted choirs & directed many shows in the UK and Australia.

The script writer, poet and author Dr Chris Harlow is a retired drama teacher and has extensive experience in producing shows in education settings and public theatre.

The characters in the play will not be required to do anything out of the ordinary except to portray their character and be part of a supportive team.

Expenses paid - Return Train or petrol expenses from Perth to Mandurah

Collaborations should create mutual benefit and are usually amateur, student or 'Time for Print' projects.


Rachel - Female lead - needs soprano voice

Rachel is a well educated environmentalist activist who is against the establishment of a radio-active waste storage facility in WA. To complicate matters, she falls in love with Tony, the project manager of Pantopia, with its ensuing conflict of interests

Shane is Rachel's brother who has been unemployed for several years. He sees the establishment of the storage facility as a positive opportunity for employment, even if it means going against his sister and other members of the community.

Alex - over-the-top CEO of Pantopia

Alex is the CEO of Pantopia, a global mining company, that stands to make significant financial gains with the establishment of the waste facility. He is not always open and honest with his employers and the community about the potential risks to lives and the environment

Tony -Pantopia project manager - need tenor voice

Tony's character requires skilful acting as he moves from totally supporting the Pantopia project to its total rejection of the project when he falls in love with Rachel. He has to be able to demonstrate the emotions of enthusiasm, love and sadness.

Norm - corrupt politician - able to speak/sing

Norm is a politician who is willing to accept a bribe in exchange for promoting Pantopia in the WA Parliament, as the preferred company for the project. He is a 'little to the left and a tad to the right'. Needs to be able to act in a 'whimsical' manner

Johnny is a politician who is youngish, keen and perhaps a little innocent in his Greenie beliefs but is not totally fooled by Alex.

This character plays the part of an outspoken politician determined to maintain honest transparency within WA Parliament.

This character must be able to have an authoritative manner in order to control outspoken politicians and the protesting rabble in the Public Gallery.

This character portrays a thoughtful. intelligent Aboriginal elder who is much respected by the community. She is a strong supporter of Rachel.

Crowd actors

Crowd characters are required to sing & chant together and dance in pub scenes, act as Members of Parliament and community members and contribute to off stage riot noises. The crowd scenes are an important aspect of the musical but will suit enthusiastic inexperienced actors
