"Asylum" is a short drama.

In a prison camp on tropical Manus Island, men who have improperly sought asylum in Australia are imprisoned by the Australian Government. There, out of sight and out of mind, prisoners endure regular and calculated debasement at the hands of the guards. When guards attempt to confiscate a guitar from the detainee Kayhan, labeling it a dangerous object, Kayhan can’t suppress his sense of injustice. He takes a stand for his human rights, forcing the guards to respond.

Successful applicants must be willing to travel to the shoot location in Cairns for the shoot dates. Accommodation and flights will be covered.

Shooting in early June 2021, near Cairns. Exact dates tbc.

Job payment

Unpaid – this is a collaboration opportunity

Expenses paid - Flights, accommodation and food will be covered for the duration of the shoot.

Collaborations should create mutual benefit and are usually amateur, student or 'Time for Print' projects.

Kayhan - Asylum Seeker, Lead Role

A musician who plays for joy in despairing circumstances. He is caring of his friends, crafty around his enemies, self-respecting, principled and proud. Kayhan speaks with a Kurdish accent. He should seem weathered, with some sharpness to his features. He should be capable of exhibiting genuine warmth but also, a bitter and threatening anger. Knowledge and skill in traditional Kurdish music is ideal, but not essential.

Dana - Asylum Seeker, Supporting Role

The oldest asylum seeker in detention, he considers himself a father figure. A quiet man who assesses situations, measures his words and bides his time, he is slow to action but acts powerfully. Dana should be played by a man with strong fatherly qualities and calculating eyes. A powerful singing voice and a natural accent is ideal but not essential.

Ervin - Asylum Seeker, Supporting Role

Ervin is a young man who should have had a better life. His confidence has been shattered by circumstance, and he gravitates toward people who have kept theirs intact. Kayhan and Dana have taken the young man under their wing and are very fond of him. Ervin should be played by a young man of African appearance who can exhibit a shy nature. Sudanese or Somali heritage is desirable but not a requirement. This is a mainly non-speaking role so a natural accent is not a requirement.

Alex - Prison Guard, Supporting Role

Alex is the prison warden. He has a military background. He is unquestioning in his mandate to guard the asylum seekers, and whilst he wouldn’t say it aloud, he takes some pleasure in the power it affords him. He prides himself on what he considers a restrained and diplomatic approach to his duties. However, he’s motivated by prejudice more than he cares to admit. If he begins to lose control, he will become violent.

Alicia - Prison Guard, Supporting Role

Alicia is a prison guard. She’s friendly with the prisoners, and is not unliked among them. Like the other guards, she’s from a military background, but unlike the others, she has begun to question her role in the detainment of asylum seekers. She’s more passive in her role, and is never outwardly cruel. However she will back the other guards in a conflict. Alicia should be played by an Australian woman, who’s a bit rough around the edges but in an endearing manner.

Michael - Prison Guard, Supporting Role

Michael is prison guard. He’s a racist, and not much ashamed of it. He’s quick to rudeness and violence and must occasionally be reigned in by Alex, so that he doesn’t escalate tensions. He doesn’t care to examine his role in the situation. He’s happy enough with the hefty wage he receives from the security firm, and in the dynamic of the prison, sees himself as an enforcer. Michael should be played by an Australian man who can present as brutish and cruel. He should be physically imposing.
