Female Actors Required for Lead and Support Roles in Psychological Thriller

London, UK. Apply from all UK.
Listed by View details

Elda is a psychological thriller, of maximum 60 minutes that includes sequences of choreographed movement, ballet and theatrical costumes. This work explores current themes: politics of sickness, privatisation of healthcare and transformations of the UK welfare system.

We follow the last weeks of Elda's life on earth as a European white woman in her late thirties. A former ballerina and myo-fascial movement trainer, she witnesses the crumbling of the city, her clients and the medical system, while fighting a mysterious disease that the medical system doesn’t seem to be able to diagnose.

Set in London, the film shows the architecture of the city at dis-ease - ever increasing homelessness, relentless consumerism, fierceless regenerations, rising nationalistic politics, and ruthless privatisation of the healthcare system; welfare state down on its knees - in a proximate future very close to ours. Will Elda survive? And will the city be saved? Here the architecture of the body and that of the city are set one in front of the other.

This film, which I wrote before Covid-19, is autobiographical and very close to me, but it feels like this story could represent anyone in the current state of the healthcare system. A year on from the global pandemic, and the systemic inequalities it laid bare, this film feels more needed than ever before!

The film will be shown in galleries and museums as part of a show and potentially on platforms such as MUBI. It is founded by the Arts Council of England.

There is no graphic content or special requirements other than an openness to improvisation and potential ballet training which is only welcomed not required!

About me, I am a visual artist working in moving image researching human anatomy in motion and physiology, alternative healing practices and histories of social welfare. My work is choreographic, engaging directly with films’ narratives and character development.

Since 2015 I have performed and exhibited work internationally in solo and group shows in artist-led organisations, project spaces, galleries and museums. These have included Triest Gallery, New York [2020], Life Sport Project Space, Athens [2019 & 2016], South London Gallery [2018], Zacheta National Gallery, Warsaw [2017], Showroom MAMA, Rotterdam [2016], 9th Berlin Biennale, Berlin [2016], The Composing Rooms, Berlin [2016], Years Gallery, Copenhagen [2016], Et Al Gallery, San Francisco [2015], MAXXI Museum, Rome [2015].

My practice often takes a highly collaborative outlook, which will be highly relevant to the making of ELDA. I bring individuals together from diverse disciplines; In the past I have worked with medical practitioners, movement and dietitian experts, community organisers, as well as musicians and visual artists.

For instance, ‘Tender, Love and Care’ (2018), a film exhibited at South London Gallery as part of the group show ‘For Some Future Times’, was the result of my three months collaboration with SLG’s CYP initiative Art Assassins, where I worked with 13 young people, an historian and SLG to develop characters and narratives exploring how what we eat relates to our social identity and the politics of care.

Alongside my visual art practice, since 2016 I compose, produce and sing as ‘NINA’ and since 2020 with the band ‘bar italia’, both currently releasing music with the label World Music. Moreover, the music compositions of my video work has been made by me.
