Date of Filming:

Saturday 30th August, All day, starting 8am

Project:

Artist's video commission. Victoria Lucas (artist / director) has been commission by the National Portrait Gallery to make a film that responds to the First World War. The film will be exhibited at The Redbridge Museum in London from the 11th November and hosted on the National Portrait Gallery's website

Role:

Each female character in Scene One will represent women of WW1. Before the war
began, the Suffragettes fought tirelessly for women's rights. When the war broke out, they
halted their active campaign and threw themselves in to the war effort for King and
Country. Women's outstanding efforts on the home front during WW1 did not go unnoticed,
and in 1918 women over 30 were given the vote for the first time in British history. The
role will be to represent strong women who for the first time had experienced
independence and freedom in the many jobs they were assigned to for the duration.

On the other hand, the characters will represent the mothers, sisters and daughters who
lost male relatives to the war. Selected actresses will be asked to march together through the landscape, down to a muddy field. Mud, or earth, is the main focus of the film. It represents in
inhospitable nature of no mans land, and is the substance that dominates so many
soldiers accounts when they describe the trenches. Many bodies of soldiers were never
recovered from the mud, and women were never able to bury their loved ones as a result.
The scene in the film will involve all of the members of this 'women's army' digging in vain
for their loved ones with their bare hands. This scene will encapsulate the emotions and experiences that women must have encountered at this time - loss and absence against new found freedom and purpose.

Clothing:

I would like all actresses to arrive at the set wearing grey clothing, as close in style to the clothing worn by women in WW1. The clothing shouldn't be modern but doesn't have to be exact, and should reference the various roles that women will have had at that time - factory workers, kitchen staff, land girls etc. Try to avoid light grey if possible, and please send me an image of what you plan to wear as soon as possible. If you could also wear a plain accessory such as a scarfe, belt, badge or necklace in one of the suffragette colours (see link below) that would be great. Again, please let me know what you intend to wear and what colour so I can plan accordingly. If you are struggling with any of this please get in touch with your size requirements.
