The Last Laugh is an irreverent seriocomedy short set in a comedy club in Melbourne.

Frank, a novice comedian with no boundaries is bombing on stage when he begins to take his humour to the audience. After some confusion he finds out that Charlie, the audience member he has targeted, is in a wheelchair. Frank, ignoring Charlie’s discomfort, takes it up a notch and divides the audience with a barrage of contentious jokes about his disability. Later, Charlie enters Frank’s dressing room and demands an apology.

The film is a look at freedom of speech vs the struggles against discrimination and aims to take a neutral stance at both sides of the issue but show the importance of healthy discussion. It is essentially about walking in another's shoes and being open to new ideas but presented in a confronting, tongue-in-cheek way.

This is a second year film for Swinburne University students.

Audition / Rehearsal / Production dates

Shooting in Melbourne for 3 days in the first week of October (1st - 7th). The exact days to be confirmed ASAP.

Frank (Stand Up Comedian)

Frank is a struggling stand up comedian who is quick witted, cynical, often seen as a smart ass. He talks quicker than he thinks and often to his detriment. Think a more subdued and pessimistic Jesse Eisenberg from “The Social Network”. He has some warmth to him - a likeable asshole.

Males, aged 18 to 35 from Victoria, Australia

Charlie

Charlie is often quiet, firm and stubborn - brooding. He has a temper and a lot of built up emotions. Charlie holds, firmly, traditional views about respect, responsibility and what is means to be a good man. Charlie’s wife was killed in a car accident which also resulted in him becoming a wheelchair-bound paraplegic. This role requires the performer to convey intense anger and sadness. Charlie should elicit sympathy without being desperate for it.

Males, aged 40 to 60 from Victoria, Australia
