How to Maximise Your Acting Cover Letter

An actor cover letter serves to introduce you and your work to industry professionals. It does not guarantee being cast in a role or securing representation, but it allows you to show some personality and it plays a key role in piquing enough interest that those industry professionals will click through to your linked or attached materials, including your headshots, showreel and CV. 

There are a number of instances in which it would be appropriate for an actor to use a cover letter.

1. Applying for a specific role: Many casting sites have the option to include a short message when submitting yourself for a role. Writing a short paragraph that introduces yourself and briefly summarises why you would be a good fit for the role can be a useful way to stand out. 
2. Inviting a casting director or director to watch your work: If you are currently appearing in a production, either live or onscreen, it’s a great opportunity to connect with casting directors and directors. Here your cover letter is likely to be in the form of a short email inviting them to watch you perform in the hopes of building a future working relationship. 
3. Seeking representation with an acting agent: A brief acting cover letter – again usually sent via email – that succinctly introduces you and your work (via links and attachments) to an agent is a necessary part of securing representation. The overall goal is to secure a meeting to discuss signing with them.

Casting director Nadine Rennie’s advice is to “keep it succinct and get to the point.” Agents and casting directors are extremely busy, receiving hundreds of emails and submissions a week. A strong acting cover letter will be simple and direct rather than lengthy and rambling. Rennie recommends a “four-line rule” that provides just enough information to get their attention, while concisely communicating the purpose of your writing. 

A rough guide for how to structure your actor cover letter could be:

The address: Ensure that you do your research and address the specific person you are writing to by their name, rather than a generic “Dear sir” or “Dear madam.”

Line one: Begin your actor cover letter by introducing who you are, including any key traits or skills of note. 

Line two: State the purpose of your writing, such as inviting them to watch you perform, and mention any connection you may have to the person you are writing to. (Have you met them previously? Has someone recommended you get in touch?)

Line three: Link to your materials (such as a CV and showreel), and mention any significant credits or awards you have. Quality over quantity is key here. One credit of note and two or three links is plenty. Anything more could be off-putting and, as Rennie says, “a link to your CV or Spotlight page will tell me everything I need to know about what you’ve done, if you’ve trained, if you’re represented, and an idea of the companies and directors you’ve worked with, so you don’t really need to go into that.”

Line four: End your actor cover letter with a brief concluding line and call to action. (For example: “If you would like to book in to watch me performing in [X show], please let me know by [X date] and I would be happy to arrange a ticket.”)

In practice, these lines may end up being two sentences. But just remember that the golden rule with these letters is to be clear and concise.

Below are three examples of actor cover letters that will give you an idea of what to include when you’re inviting someone to see your work, seeking representation, or applying for a specific role.

Industry invitation example

Dear Nadine, 

I am a queer, neurodivergent actor and writer about to appear in my award-winning one-woman show, Niagara Falls, at the Cockpit Theatre [insert link]. 

You have cast some of my favourite shows at Soho Theatre – The Ministry of Lesbian Affairs was a particular favourite – and I would be delighted to arrange tickets for you during the run (11 April to 9 May).

Seeking representation example

Dear Alice,

Applying for a role example

Dear Sean, 

I am a classically trained actor of Ghanaian descent, based in Manchester. 

I saw that you are currently casting an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet at the Royal Exchange Theatre, which is set in Accra. I would love to be considered for the role of the Nurse. I recently played Maria, a similarly comedic role, in a production of Twelfth Night at Halifax Playhouse.

These templates are a good starting point, but they should, of course, be tailored to your individual traits, skills, credits, and experience. They should also be adapted to the specific person you are writing to and the acting role you are applying for. It would be ill-advised to send the same template letter as a blanket email to multiple agencies or casting directors. 

Remember: Your cover letter may be the first impression you give to any industry professionals you contact, so it’s crucial to get the tone right. Follow our advice, using a confident and friendly delivery without being too presumptuous or overfamiliar, and you’ll be on the right track to building the crucial industry relationships every actor needs.
