If your TikTok content is popping off but you’re struggling to convert viewers to followers or they’re not clicking through to your links, a poor TikTok bio may be the culprit.
“If you’re not seeing growth on social media, it could be because your bio is ruining your chances of actually converting and being searchable,” says TikToker and social media consultant Lauren Webb.
The bio is where visitors turn to find out who you are, what you offer, and what action they should take next.
It’s the part of your profile that converts, whether it’s viewers to followers, followers to shoppers, or brands to partners. Research shows an optimised professional TikTok bio can increase follower conversion rates by up to 40%.
With only 160 characters (recently doubled from 80) with which to play, let’s explore how to make every word count.
JUMP TO
TikTok bios should tell people who you are and why they should follow you, and then close with a strong CTA (call to action) that tells them what to do next. First, let’s break down the two parts of a good bio.

1. Spark intrigue like Cazza

Cazza helps everyday people understand tricky financial concepts, so his bio creates intrigue by promising to lift the veil on the valuable financial info that wasn’t on the school syllabus.
2. Add emojis like Kyle Thomas

Thomas’ lively personality is matched by emojis that add visual interest and tell even non-English speakers what to expect.
3. Keep it simple like Ava Daniels

Even a light-speed scan tells you what Daniels is about, how to contact her, and where to discover more.
4. Show your personality like Bash the Entertainer

Comedian Bash captures his positive outlook and infectious laughter in a single line.
5. State your niches like the Money Man

Money Man Mat uses clean line breaks and relevant emojis to quickly and neatly detail his niches.
6. Target an audience like Sarah Law
Law outlines her target audience rather than mentioning herself. If you’re a woman over with health concerns, you may be clicking “Follow” or using her link.
7. Establish credibility like Dr Hazel Wallace
Dr Wallace’s succinct list of qualifications and accomplishments immediately establish her authority as a health and fitness influencer.
8. Make every word count like Zhila
Zhila needs only 133 characters for her niches, location, contact info, company website, social stats, and title as ‘Queen of Long Lasting Makeup’.
9. Outline your value like Alfie Evans

Evans’ bio spells out what he offers, how he’ll help, and how you can get started – all in language as no-nonsense as his “no BS fitness tips.”
1. Add a link
TikTok doesn’t allow clickable links in text overlays or video captions, but you’re allowed one in your bio with either a verified business account or a personal account that has at least 1,000 followers.
This link is essential since it pushes visitors to take certain actions, including:
- Visiting other channels and profiles
- Joining wider communities
- Finding sponsored products and affiliates
- Buying your courses or products
- Finding your portfolio or rate card
Either link to one site or create an all-in-one list of links with Linktree or Beacons. Regardless, keep the link relevant to your bio and CTA.
2. Keep it simple
“For a killer TikTok bio, keep it simple and distill it down to the most essential element of your brand,” advises e-commerce platform Shopify.
Clarity beats cleverness, so your TikTok bio should be:
- Clear and brief: Avoid complex wording, big words, or long sentences.
- Specific: “15-minute healthy vegan meals for busy professionals” beats “vegan chef.” This also helps the TikTok algorithm place your content.
- Scannable: Use line breaks, emojis, and bullet points (or emojis as bullet points).
- Actionable: Straightforward action-oriented language shows exactly what followers get. Use “join my newsletter” rather than “learn more,” for example.
3. Stay professional
Professional doesn’t mean boring, but budding TikTok influencers aiming to earn through TikTok shouldn’t be too unhinged or casual, especially if you’re applying for content-creation jobs.
“A polished bio signals that you take your presence seriously,” according to content-creation platform InfluencerFlow. “Users who feel confident in your professionalism are more likely to visit your shop, website, or landing page.”
You should:
- Include everything potential partners need
- Avoid off-colour language
- Stay relevant to your niche
- Avoid being too personal
- Use emojis in moderation (one to three is fine)
- Add relevant credentials
Include social proof if you’re hoping to work with businesses (including other solopreneurs). High numbers for conversions or sales speak louder than words.
4. Update it regularly
The great TikTok bio you write today could require adaptation as your TikTok content ideas change, your community grows, or simply because time passes.
Consider alterations when you:
- Shift niches
- Add or remove services and products
- Secure new brand partnerships and affiliates
- Find your audience shifting
- Notice dated phrases or content (such as trend-specific CTAs)
5. Think mobile-first
Three-quarters of TikTok users access the platform via mobile, so prioritise mobile readability by:
- Testing on both desktop and mobile
- Using simple fonts and large text to ensure readability without zooming
- Including frequent line breaks
