If there’s one thing theatre people do well, it’s awards season. You’ll see it in the sharp suits, dazzling gowns, and emotional, heartfelt speeches after the winning envelope is opened. The UK Theatre Awards bring all of that glitz and glamour, celebrating the beating heart of British theatre beyond the West End. From touring productions to regional powerhouses, this is the night that proves theatrical brilliance doesn’t need a London postcode to shine.
“Since 1991, UK Theatre’s annual UK Theatre Awards have celebrated the creative excellence and outstanding work seen on and offstage throughout England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland,” reads the UK Theatre Awards website. For aspiring actors, the winners and nominees offer a snapshot of the great work happening all across the country.
Here’s everything you need to know about one of the most important theatrical awards ceremonies in the business.

Launched by theatre membership organisation UK Theatre in 1991, the awards were created to celebrate theatrical excellence across the country. In other words, they exist to honour the work happening beyond the capital.
Think of the UK Theatre Awards as the Olivier Awards’ well-travelled cousin (indeed, the Oliviers are overseen by UK Theatre’s London-centric sister organisation, the Society of London Theatre, or SOLT as it’s commonly called). While the Oliviers focus primarily on West End productions, the UK Theatre Awards champion the best shows in Manchester, Leeds, Cardiff, Birmingham, Newcastle, and everywhere in between.
A UK Theatre Award may not have the same international sparkle as an Olivier, but it carries serious clout inside the profession. A nomination tells casting directors and producers that your work has been seen, respected, and judged outstanding by people who really know the business. That’s gold dust for an early career actor. “For the UK Theatre Awards to exist and to recognise the work in the regions is so important,” say Kendall Feaver and Katy Rudd, the writer and director team behind The Almighty Sometimes at the Royal Exchange, which won the 2018 UK Theatre Award for best play. “It is so nice to be validated that we’re making good work and that those audiences matter outside London.”
The ceremony itself usually takes place in London, bringing together artists from across the UK for one big night of recognition. In 2025, it took place at 8 Northumberland Avenue, by Embankment tube. Traditionally, they’re held in October, with the winners announced by the industry press (like The Stage and What’s On Stage), on social media, and on the awards’ official platforms. Members of the public can also purchase tickets to the ceremony via the UK Theatre website once the date and venue have been confirmed.
Here’s a snapshot of the accolades being awarded:
- Best director
- Best design
- Best musical production
- Best new play
- Best play revival
- Achievement in dance
- Achievement in opera
- Best supporting performance (in a musical or play)
- Best performance in a musical
- Best performance in a play
- Best show for children and young people
- Excellence in arts education
- Excellence in touring
- Excellence in inclusivity
- Excellence in sustainability

- Outstanding contribution to British theatre
The awards are decided by a judging panel of theatre experts, including directors, producers, critics, and designers. The panellists attend eligible productions all over the UK throughout the year, and then meet in September to put forward the shows they deem worthy of gongs, before deliberating on the winners.
The UK Theatre Awards, in particular, underline the importance of regional theatre. So many acclaimed actors start in the regions before stepping onto a West End stage or set. “Theatre is not an exclusive taste for people who live in the metropolis,” Ian McKellen says of the awards. “Theatre audiences are everywhere and deserve to have something to listen to and look at.”
If you’re just starting out, responding to casting calls for theatre productions – as many as possible – is the best way to put yourself on that long-term radar.
Here’s the easiest way to think of the difference between the Oliviers and the UK Theatre Awards.
- Olivier Awards celebrate excellence in London’s West End, as well as a few affiliate theatres.
- UK Theatre Awards celebrate excellence across the rest of the UK, including smaller regional theatres and touring productions.
The UK Theatre Awards may not always grab headlines, but they really matter in the industry. Keep them on your radar and follow the announcements, because who knows? One day, your name may be on that list too.
