Mel Kay studied music performance at WAAPA for four years since age 17. She released her last two singles in 2016 which received commercial airplay, were performed on foxtel, multiple community radio stations and received international airplay in New York, Tokyo, Rio, Berlin, York in the U.K., South Carolina, as well as the eastern states of Australia. Upside Down Town received the attention of The A&R Department and was signed to the label. Mel is passionate about her music reaching those who have been hurt and in being a voice for the voiceless in the community. Her band Liberte was founded in 2015 and is focused on music aimed to motivate people to know their own inner power. With a mix of funk, pop, and indie music the band likes to describe their sound as a mix of Lorde, The Browhorn Orchestra, Kate Miller Heidke, and Jarryd James. Mel Kay worked as a keyboardist and backing singer in perth original band Bears and Dolls when she was 18 and now also works with Perth cover band Blue Gene performing at venues around Perth such as The Newport, The Mustang Bar, The Woodvale, and The Old Baily Tavern.
